Position Description

 

Job Summary

Under the general direction of the Director of EU&S, the Energy and Sustainability Manager provides day-to-day supervisory duties and personnel management of EU&S staff to support the EU&S and FMD mission and operational activities, management of utility business functions, programs, and projects that maintain the reliability and efficiency of campus buildings and utility systems, as well as energy and water conservation and other infrastructure projects necessary to modernize buildings and systems while controlling operating costs.

Department Summary

The Energy, Utilities and Sustainability (EU&S) department of FMD manages all campus utilities, energy and water conservation programs, solid waste and recycling, and sustainability educational outreach and behavioral change initiatives. In support of this mission, the EU&S department is responsible for energy, utility, and sustainability program and project planning, engineering design/coordination, construction, and project management, as well as energy and utility master planning for Cal Poly.

Key Qualifications

  • Demonstrated knowledge of building and central plant energy systems including heating, ventilating, air conditioning, interior/exterior lighting, boilers, chillers, thermal energy storage, co-generation, solar PV, solar thermal, plumbing, and digital control systems.

  • Working knowledge of Building Automation Systems, and ability to create, collect, and utilize trend data and reports.

  • Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to apply modern management and administrative techniques to coordinate and manage a diverse staff including the ability to enhance performance through training and professional development, coaching, and evaluation.

 Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Environmental Science, or related field.

  • Three  years’ progressively responsible experience managing energy, utilities, or sustainability.

Licenses

  • Valid California driver’s license or ability to obtain by date of hire.

  • Must be able to work additional hours, occasional holidays, and adjust working hours to meet operational and departmental needs.
  • Must be able to travel occasionally to attend meetings, conferences, and seminars.
  • Must be able to work accurately and efficiently in an area with constant noise and interruptions.
  • Ability to climb ladders and stairs, access building roofs, basements, and mechanical/electrical equipment rooms; ability to work in hot, cold, and dusty environments.
  • Ability to lift and carry equipment weighing up to 30 pounds.
  • Ability to work around hazardous materials including asbestos, lead, chemicals, and solvents with the appropriate personal protective equipment; ability to attend safety awareness training and follow campus safety procedures.
  • The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
  • Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment background/fingerprint check.
  • This position has been defined as “Exempt” and is not subject to the overtime provision of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
  • Following a conditional offer of employment, a background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate may start work with Cal Poly. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may result in the withdrawal of the offer of employment.
