Position Description

Job Summary

The Assistant Emergency Services and Business Continuity Manager works with internal and external constituencies in accordance with CSU, University, and additional requirements (i.e. governing laws, regulations, and policies) to provide optimal disaster recovery capability in the case of any significant event which requires a Standardized Emergency Management System (SEMS) alternative processing capability or an interruption to normal campus operations. In addition, this role supports business continuity program efforts and performs a full range of duties including emergency management training, exercise planning, conducts emergency preparedness training for EOC team members, supports doctrine and training for the campus Building Emergency Response Coordinator Program, and serves as a DEM Duty Officer.

Department Summary

The Department of Emergency Management is a Department under Public Safety at Cal Poly. We provide both emergency management and business continuity services to the campus community, including emergency planning, preparedness training, and hazard awareness.

  • Working knowledge of policy creation, implementation, and management.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and cultivating relationships with diverse and high-level constituencies.
  • Ability to support a high-level of responsibility in a large, complex and successful program with annual multi-year goals in a major long-term capital project campaign.
  • Skilled in using change, new ideas, constructive feedback, and challenges as an opportunity to learn and grow.
  • Demonstrated customer service experience requiring a very high level of diplomacy and professionalism.

Education and Experience

Equivalent to a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in emergency management, fire management, public administration, or a related field and least three (3) years of experience in program or project coordination. Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for up to four (4) years of the required education on a year-for-year basis.

This position may be "Designated" under California State University's Conflict of Interest Code. This would require the filing of a Statement of Economic Interest on an annual basis and the completion of training within 6 months of assuming office and every 2 years thereafter.
