Position Description

Job Summary

Under the direction of the Director of Payroll and Benefits, the Benefits Coordinator plays a key role in supporting the organization’s benefits programs and contributing to an engaged and equitable employee experience. This position contributes to the success of benefits administration by coordinating a variety of benefits-related activities, including providing exceptional customer service, eligibility guidance, enrollment assistance and processing, issue resolution, auditing and reporting, and coordinating employee communications, events, webpages, and other benefits-related activities.

This is a full-time temporary position for 12 months and is eligible for full benefits, including medical, dental, vision and CalPERS retirement.

Department Summary

The Human Resources (HR) department within University Personnel at Cal Poly leads workplace strategies that enable our approximately 3000 employees (staff, faculty and management) to thrive in their roles.  Through traditional practices like recruitment, benefits, employee relations, information systems and performance management to strategic practices like professional development, organization development, workforce planning, and engagement, Human Resources is dedicated to cultivating the excellence of all employees.

Key Qualifications

  • General knowledge of employee benefits administration practices. Ability to learn, interpret, and apply a wide variety of policies, procedures, and regulations relating to and impacting employee benefits programs.
  • Demonstrated customer service skills, including a high level of diplomacy and professionalism. Ability to analyze and troubleshoot benefits issues and discrepancies within established guidelines, exercising sound judgment in determining when to resolve directly and when to escalate to higher-level professionals.
  • Demonstrated ability to act with diplomacy and tact when interacting with others while modeling and maintaining high ethical standards and confidentiality. Ability to appropriately handle sensitive and confidential information. Treats all with dignity, respect, and fairness, and earns trust through consistent alignment of words and actions.
  • Demonstrated skill in communicating effectively with all audiences, both verbally and in writing, including the ability to clearly explain benefits programs, eligibility requirements, and procedures to employees at all levels of the organization. Regularly solicits and actively listens to the perspectives of others and incorporates new knowledge into thinking and actions.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in processing transactions, maintaining records, and reviewing benefits data.

Education and Experience

  • Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in a related field. Relevant education and/or experience which demonstrates acquired and successfully applied knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

Salary and Benefits

Anticipated Hiring Range: $57,588 - $66,156 per year

Classification Range: $57,588 - $83,904 per year

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Anticipated Hiring Range referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Classification Range may be broader than what the University anticipates paying for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).

Supplemental Information

Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment.
