Position Title: Counselor Faculty (Temporary) - 2 vacancies for AY-schedule and 2 vacancies
for 12-month schedule

Department/College Summary:
The Student Wellness Center provides caring, quality, integrated, student-centered health,
counseling, and wellness promotion services to SJSU students in support of their ability to
perform optimally, physically, and mentally. Within Counseling and Psychological Services
(CAPS), professionally trained clinicians are available for students on an individual, couple, or
group basis for therapeutic services on a variety of psychological and mental health issues. In
addition to direct clinical services, the Counselor Faculty may provide campus outreach,
training, and consultation to students, faculty, and staff.


Position Details:
Under the general supervision of the Director and Associate Director of Counseling and
Psychological Services, the selected candidate is expected to provide a full range of culturally
sensitive clinical mental health services to support San José State students.


Although listed as a “temporary” position, this is a full-time position, eligible for annual
renewal and is benefit-eligible for the full-suite of the robust benefits provided to California
State University employees. AY-schedule employees work during all duty days of the
Academic Year and do not accrue vacation. 12-month employees work all days the campus is
open, including times when classes are not in session, but receive 14 paid holidays per year
and are eligible to accrue up to 24 vacation days per year.


The anticipated salary for this position starts at $7,100/month (AY-schedule) or
$7,800/month (12-month) for individuals with a masters degree and the minimum of 2 years
of experience. A doctorate degree, additional years of experience, and experience providing
therapy in another language will all increase pay, though compensation is expected not to
exceed $9,200/month (AY-schedule) or $10,000/month (12-month).


Summary of Duties
Clinical Services: Provide brief individual therapy for SJSU students; mental health services
include conducting clinical interviews and assessment, formulating diagnoses, and developing
evidence-based treatment planning, providing therapeutic interventions and maintaining
timely and thorough documentation within a brief therapy model. All therapists serve on a
rotation to triage and provide crisis interventions. Clinical services can also include case
management, as appropriate, including providing referrals to and consultation with other
campus staff and faculty and community mental health providers and agencies. Further,
clinical services may include providing group therapy, couples therapy, conducting workshops,
and offering consultation regarding issues that affect the educational, vocational,
developmental, and psychological well-being of students in the university community.
All counselor faculty will maintain a clinical case load providing clinical services. Some

individuals may have additional assignments based on their training, experience, and
interests. Additional Duties may include:


Outreach Services: Develop and participate in outreach programs to the SJSU campus
community with a highly diverse student population; participate in the development and
implementation of assigned outreach activities, workshops and/or presentations, classroom
presentations, residence hall training. Outreach may include occasional evening or weekend
activities.


Supervision: As appropriate and at the discretion of the Director and/or Associate Director,
provide clinical supervision to psychology trainees; co-facilitate outreach activities,
workshops, and groups with all levels of supervisees; provide didactic and training seminars
for all levels of supervisees.


Service/Committee Work: In keeping with the mission of an urban university, the necessity to
relate to the regional area which the university serves, and consistent with the social justice
emphasis of Counseling and Psychological Services, counselor faculty members are expected
to serve on Department, Division, and University committees.


Required Education
   ● Doctorate in counseling or clinical psychology from a regionally accredited university;
      or
   ● Masters in Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy, or equivalent from an
     accredited university;
   ● AND Licensed in the State of California to practice as a mental health counselor
     (can include Licensed Psychologist, LPCC, LMFT, or LCSW)
       o Candidates who have not yet obtained licensure but have accrued all
         supervised hours may be considered. Please include in the application
         materials a description of when licensure can be reasonably expected.

Required Experience and Qualifications
    ● Candidates should demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity to the
      educational goals of a multicultural population as might have been gained in
      cross-cultural study, training, teaching and other comparable experience;
    ● Possess at least 2 years of clinical experience in providing individual, couple, and
      group therapies; and
    ● Demonstrate experience in clinical assessment, crisis interventions, diagnosis,
      and treatment planning within a brief therapy model.


Preferred Qualifications
   ● Experience and interest in providing clinical services with:
     o Neurodivergent clients/students, including autism,
     o Clients/Students of African descent and the African/Black diaspora;
     o Clients/Students who identify as Latine/o/a,
   ● Bilingual fluency and experience conducting therapy in a second language that
    aligns with the SJSU population;
   ● Experience in the delivery of clinical counseling services in a college or university
    setting; or

   ● Experience working with a multi-disciplinary team within an integrated system.


Responsibilities
     ● Candidates must address the mental health, developmental and academic
       achievement needs of a student population of great diversity – in age, abilities,
       cultural background, ethnicity, religion, economic background, primary language,
       sexual orientation, gender identity, and academic preparation – through inclusive
       course materials, teaching strategies and advisement.
    ● Successful candidates are expected to collaborate and work closely with other
       disciplines/departments, developing and implementing innovative non-traditional
       services for the diverse student population.
    ● The candidate will participate in shared governance, usually in the department, college,
       and university committees and other service assignments.


Campus Security Authority
Pursuant to the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime
Statistics Act (Clery Act) and CSU systemwide policy, the faculty counselor member in this
position is subject to ongoing review for designation as a Campus Security Authority (CSA).
Individuals designated as Campus Security Authorities are required to immediately report
Clery incidents to the institution and to complete Clery Act training as determined by the

Compensation
Anticipated starting salary:
    $7,100-$9,200/month – Academic Year Schedule
    $7,800-$10,000/month - 12-month Schedule
Compensation will be determined based on education and experience for the position.
