Position Summary

Under the general supervision of the Senior Associate Athletic Director of External Affairs, the Promotions and Fan Engagement Specialist is responsible for strategically planning and executing all marketing efforts for the department of Athletics with the goals of increasing awareness, driving attendance, engaging students/fans and enhancing the customer experience at athletic events. The incumbent is responsible for the day-to-day operations, game-day operations, promotions, on-court/on-field promotions and manages the fan engagement budget.

The Promotions and Fan Engagement Specialist schedules and provides lead work direction to the students, interns, volunteers and Casual Workers who make up the Promotions and Fan Engagement team as well as marching/pep bands and spirit groups. The incumbent ensures compliance with conference, NCAA, University and CSU rules and regulations.

FLSA: Exempt (Not eligible for overtime compensation)

Anticipated Hiring Range: $4,146 per month - $4,478 per month

CSU Classification Salary Range: $4,146 per month - $7,500 per month

Work Hours: Monday through Friday with the frequent need to work evenings and weekends to meet operational needs.

Department Information 

The program of Intercollegiate Athletics is organized and conducted as an integral part of the total educational program of the University. Academic excellence and athletic accomplishments go hand in hand at Sacramento State. There are three separate and unique missions in this program: to contribute to the educational objectives of the University; to provide a healthy, competitive athletic experience to individual student-athletes; to serve as a public relations vehicle within the community.

The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics offers both academic courses and an intercollegiate athletics program. Academic courses offer the opportunity for individuals to gain knowledge and understanding in a particular area of expertise related to intercollegiate athletics.

Minimum Qualifications 

Entry to the first level within this classification requires knowledge of the fundamentals of public affairs and/or media relations, and/or some exposure to marketing and marketing research. This background normally is obtained through a college degree, which includes relevant coursework in the field, and up to two years of related professional or technical experience. In addition, strong written and verbal communication skills with a solid foundation in grammar, spelling, and the composition of various communication vehicles are essential to initial entry to this classification.

Required Qualifications 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  1. Working knowledge of and ability to apply standard theories, practices, principles and techniques related to communications in the public affairs, media, marketing, and/or sports information areas.
  2. Ability to translate University communication objectives and apply expert knowledge into effective communication and media campaigns.
  3. Demonstrated ability to keep abreast of campus events and subject matter expertise in relation to current events to identify and capitalize on media opportunities that will promote the university and increase positive media coverage.
  4. Knowledge of applicable copyright and other laws pertaining to publications and the news media.
  5. Ability to effectively manage media relations and apply effective media strategies and techniques.
  6. Demonstrated ability to market story concepts to university officials and media outlets.
  7. Knowledge of marketing and research techniques and methods. Ability to apply market research to identify communication needs and target audiences. Working knowledge of appropriate use of statistical techniques.
  8. Demonstrated strong commitment to inclusion and diversity including but not limited to differences in ethnicity, national origin, race, gender, sexual orientation, gender identification and ability.
  9. Exceptional interpersonal skills, including strong public speaking, listening and interpretive skills.
  10. Expert writing and editorial skills.
  11. Demonstrated organizational skills.
  12. Ability to provide lead work direction.
  13. Commitment to maintaining a welcoming and inclusive work environment with diverse colleagues and constituents including faculty, students, staff, and members of the community.

  2. Two years of experience at the Division I collegiate or professional level in marketing and promotions.
