PURPOSE:

Under the general supervision of the Executive Director of the Center for Experiential Learning and Innovation, the Career Advisor serves as a key member of a dynamic team dedicated to empowering diverse learners to thrive in an evolving global workforce. Cal State University Monterey Bay seeks a forward-thinking, student-centered professional who blends traditional career guidance with innovative, future-focused practices. The Career Advisor is responsible for designing, delivering, and enhancing a wide range of career development services—including workshops, networking events, experiential learning opportunities, informational and marketing materials, and individualized advising sessions. This role leverages technology, labor market insights, and personalized coaching to help students explore career pathways, build essential 21st-century skills, and make informed, strategic decisions about their futures.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. Career and Academic/Career Connections Advising

Provides individualized and small group advising to an assigned caseload of students, offering comprehensive guidance on career exploration, academic pathways, and employment preparation. Utilizes career-related assessment tools to help students identify strengths, interests, and values, using an asset-based, strengths-focused approach to interpret results and connect them to meaningful academic and career decisions. Supports students holistically in setting and achieving personal, academic, and professional goals, including the development of career action plans and preparation for internships, jobs, and graduate or professional school opportunities.

  1. Career Resources, Workshops, and Experiential Learning Integration

Designs, coordinates, and delivers a variety of career development workshops and programs tailored to diverse student populations. Topics include career exploration and planning, aligning academic pathways with long-term goals, job search strategies, résumé and cover letter writing, and interview preparation. Develops accessible and engaging resources in both print and digital formats to support students’ career readiness.

Promotes and facilitates student participation in high-impact experiential learning opportunities such as internships, co-ops, research projects, service learning, and micro-internships. Collaborates with faculty, staff, and campus partners to integrate these experiences into academic and co-curricular programming, ensuring they align with students’ career goals. Develops and delivers graduate school preparation resources, workshops, and presentations to help students understand admissions processes, application strategies, academic expectations, and funding opportunities for advanced study.

Fosters strong institutional partnerships by working closely with faculty, academic departments, student organizations, and other campus units to embed career development throughout the student journey and align initiatives with broader institutional priorities.

  1. Employer & Industry Engagement and Professional Development

Cultivates and maintains strategic relationships with employers, alumni, and industry professionals to increase student access to internships, employment opportunities, mentorship, and professional networking. Collaborates with external partners to understand evolving workforce needs and facilitate meaningful connections between students and industry leaders. Engages in ongoing professional development to stay informed about current trends in higher education, career services, and the labor market. Actively participates in trainings, conferences, and professional communities to enhance knowledge, inform practice, and contribute to continuous improvement in career advising services.

  1. Communication, Equity, and Inclusive Student Success

Manages the collection, organization, and distribution of information related to career opportunities, programs, and events relevant to students in assigned academic disciplines. Effectively engages students, faculty, staff, and community partners through diverse communication strategies, including email campaigns, social media, classroom presentations, newsletters, and individual or group meetings. Promotes equity and inclusion by fostering a welcoming, student-centered advising environment that respects and addresses the diverse backgrounds, identities, and experiences of all students. Proactively supports the success of historically and marginalized student populations by ensuring equitable access to resources, opportunities, and support systems.

  1. Special Events, Marketing, and Resource Development

Develops accessible, inclusive, and visually engaging career development resources and promotional materials to increase student awareness of and participation in career-related programs and services. Assists in the planning, coordination, and execution of signature events, including career fairs, graduate school fairs, and internship expos. Represents CSUMB Career Services at outreach and recruitment events, new student orientations, and campus-wide opportunity fairs, serving as an ambassador for the department and its mission.

Other Functions:

Perform other job-related duties and special projects as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Working knowledge of the principles of individual and group behavior; procedures and activities of the program to which assigned; general knowledge of the methods and problems of organizational and program management. General knowledge of research and interview techniques, and of the principles of individual and group behavior.

Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations; use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements; obtain factual and interpretative information through interviews; reason logically; collect, compile, analyze and evaluate data and make verbal or written presentations based on these data; advise students individually and in groups on routine matters where required; recognize multicultural, multi-sexed and multi-aged value systems and work accordingly; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations, private and public agencies and others in committee work, and student advising and community contacts; and, rapidly acquire a general knowledge of the overall operation, functions and programs of the campus to which assigned. Demonstrated ability to make decisions and carry through actions having implications with regard to other program or service areas Services Office.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience:  Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth.   A master’s degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.

Education:  Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job‑ related field. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS/DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE:

Master’s degree in a job-related field preferred. Prior career advising experience, including development of career resources and workshops for students, as well as one-on-one career counseling.  Experience supporting a diverse student population.  Working knowledge of FERPA and other federal regulations related to the release of educational records to third parties, general university policies and procedures.  Experience with Microsoft Office Professional Suite (particularly Excel), and Google Suite; Simplicity, Sales Force, or other products.

  • This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority (CSA).  The position is required to participate in training at the direction of the Clery Director and must also promptly report allegations of reportable crimes according to the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act, its accompanying regulations; the California State Education Code, Chapter 15.5, of the Donahoe Higher Education Act, Section 67380; and the California State University system-wide policy, Code EO 1107.
  • May require evenings and/or occasional weekend work.

PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT:

Office environment with standard equipment and tasks. Position requires working at a computer and desk for extended periods of time. May be required to work remotely, and occasional evenings or Saturdays. Travel required between campus offices and off-campus locations.
