The CSU Chancellor's Office, located on the waterfront adjacent to the Aquarium of the Pacific in downtown Long Beach, is the headquarters for the nation's largest and most diverse system of higher education. Salary

The anticipated salary hiring range is up to $58,248 per year, commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Position Information

The California State University, Office of the Chancellor, is seeking a Media Relations and Public Affairs Coordinator to support the development and execution of media relations strategies that elevate awareness of the CSU’s programs, initiatives, and events. Under the direction of the director, media relations and public affairs, this role is responsible for creating communications materials, coordinating media outreach, monitoring coverage, and ensuring alignment of public relations activities across departments.

This position is approved for telecommuting (two days telecommuting, three days in office (in-person)) with onsite work at the main headquarters located in Long Beach, California.

Responsibilities

Under the general direction of the Director, Media Relations and Public Affairs, the Media Relations and Public Affairs Coordinator will:

-Draft and edit press releases, media advisories, media kits, and other communications materials.

-Distribute press releases through Cision and ensure accurate tracking.

-Coordinate press conferences, media interviews, and other public relations events and activities.

-Monitor media coverage to compile daily “News of the CSU” clips and track relevant higher education news.

-Conduct research as needed to support strategic communication planning.

-Assist in preparing campaign summaries and reports.

-Produce and distribute weekly team updates.

-Maintain and regularly update databases (i.e. subject matter experts, news subscriptions).

-Collaborate with internal teams to identify and pitch newsworthy stories to media outlets.

-Manage team SharePoint site.

-Maintain and update content on the CSU News webpage.

-Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

This position requires:

-Bachelor's degree in public relations, journalism, English or a related field from an accredited university or equivalent combination of education and related experience is required.

-Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

-Strong knowledge of media outlets and influencers.

-Two years of PR or relevant media relations experience.

-High skill level in Microsoft Office suite of software products. 

-High proficiency with technology.

-PR agency experience preferred.

-Strong writing and verbal skills.

-Strong judgement and the ability to maintain information of confidential nature.            

-Ability to complete tasks under deadline or in emergency situations.

-High comfort level with technology and software.

-Resourcefulness.

-Ability to problem solve and troubleshoot.

-Ability to multi-task on a wide variety of projects.        

-Attention to detail.

-Proofreading skills.

-Professional demeanor.
