
Job Summary
The University Web Developer and User Experience Designer reports directly to the Assistant Director of Web Development, UX, and Content, and receives additional general direction from the Digital Director of Marketing and Communications, and art direction from the Senior Director of Creative Strategy and Branding. This position is a key member of the Digital Marketing and Communications (Digital) team responsible for the visual and functional design of the sjsu.edu website(s). The incumbent continually develops and designs the look and feel driving the San José State University web presence; integrates user experience design best practices; and contributes to content strategy. The position is responsible for the web programing, design and maintenance methods, production and visual development of the sjsu.edu home page, web templates, web components, tools and custom integrations, news pages and sites, top-level pages within the site map, all pages and sites managed by University Marketing and Communications (UMC) and the Office of the President, and enterprise-wide web and digital media. The incumbent also provides consultation and general web design and content assistance to other university departments as appropriate.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the core SJSU website(s) with continually updated graphics, multimedia and visual user-interface improvements.
- Support the visual development of communications outlets including the SJSU Newsroom, Washington Square Magazine Digital Issues, and various campaign and other fundraising web properties.
- Design web interfaces and collaborate with UMC and other stakeholders on the development of interface pattern libraries.
- Integrate design patterns to university websites, campaign websites, blogs, emails, and other digital platforms.
- Following the general digital marketing direction from the Director of Digital Marketing and Communications and art direction provided by the Senior Director of Creative Strategy, create a consistent visual design for the SJSU.edu website.
- Apply universal design principles ensuring accessibility of digital content and applications.
- Align content strategy initiatives with user experience project plans.
- Contribute to web project planning, strategy and documentation.
- Collaborate with internal and external developers on web components/templates /integrations requiring more advanced development, scripting and programming.
- Collaborate with technical and creative contributors to coordinate changes to SJSU’s interface design patterns and templates.
- Provide web graphics and general web content support to SJSU divisions and departments.
- Stay current new user-centered design trends and UX strategies.
- Create web and interface concept sketches, flows, wireframes, mockups, and prototypes to support the design process.
- Conduct user research using formal and informal methods, interpret user needs, gather requirements by consulting stakeholders, analyze web analytics, and assess current interfaces.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Extensive knowledge of interface, photo and graphic design software, including Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, Figma, Adobe Xd, Sketch and iMovie Premiere Pro
- Knowledge of TextMate, TextWrangler, Sublime Text, Dreamweaver, MS Visual Studio Code or other code-editing tools
- Knowledge of content management systems, WordPress, Modern Campus and Drupal templates, email marketing tools, and video editing software
- Thorough knowledge of universal design and web accessibility standards
- Ability to work with CSS Frameworks and maintain responsive web design libraries
- Familiarity with the scripting language JavaScript and JavaScript libraries
- Extensive knowledge of HTML, JavaScript, React, XML, XSL, SML, CSS, CMS systems, or similar blogging platforms. Google Analytics. Tableau, Looker Studio, Lucidchart and Adobe Creative Suite
- Strong graphic design skills and artistic ability to translate communication needs into design
- Familiarity with and interest in emerging technologies, including HTML5, CSS, Python, Artificial Intelligence (AI), etc.
- Comprehensive knowledge of visual design principles as applied to online media
- Ability to understand university level curriculum concepts and convey them graphically
- Knowledge of experience designing and crafting user experiences that are responsive
- Ability to sketch or prototype interactions and design concepts with Sketch, Figma, Adobe Xd or similar UI design tools, as well as Invision, Keynote, Principle, or similar prototyping tool
- Knowledge of user research techniques, usability testing, surveys, card sorting, interviews, contextual inquiries, cognitive task analysis, and heuristic evaluations
- Knowledge of combining key research findings to create personas, use cases, and user journeys
- Knowledge of web analytic software, Google Analytics, Looker Studio, and Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Practices
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems, educational technology, communications, or related fields, or similar certified coursework in applicable fields of study
- Three years of experience supporting information systems and technology
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with interface, photo and graphic design software, including Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and Premiere Pro
- Experience wire framing and prototyping interactions and design concepts with Sketch, Figma, Adobe Xd or similar UI design tools, as well as Invision, Keynote, or similar prototyping tool
- Experience with HTML/CSS, Modern Campus, Drupal and WordPress CMS

Anticipated Hiring Salary: $7,000/month
CSU Salary Range: $5,158/month - $12,730/month
