Job Summary 

Under the general supervision of the Manager of Grounds and Landscape Services or his designee maintains and trims trees of various heights to promote their health and appearance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain, trim, prune, remove, perform safety evaluations of campus trees utilizing specialized tree climbing and rigging equipment and aerial lifts.
  • Evaluate, assist, and coordinate tree trimming contracts with Field Operations Coordinator and Grounds Manager.  Data entry of tree information into Arbor pro softwear for maintenance records, and tree trimming lists.
  • Work with leads on various projects for trimming of plant material requiring the use of high range vehicle such as trimming ivy on buildings, assist pest control specialist on treatment of trees with chemicals for insect control and fertilizing.  Oversee and schedule work for grounds personnel.  

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

Evaluation, assistance and coordination of tree trimming contracts. Thorough knowledge of methods, materials, and tools used in trimming, shaping, cultivating, and caring for trees. Working knowledge of necessary rigging and various knots used in tree trimming work. General knowledge of different species of trees and their growing characteristics as related to pruning and shaping methods. Ability to trim trees according to accepted practices. Experience performing necessary rigging and typing of various knots used in climbing, use of climbing spikes and saddles.  Ability to work from hydraulic aerial lifts or from aerial ladders and work at considerable heights above the ground. Ability to perform work which requires physical strength and agility. Ability to read and write at a level sufficient for satisfactory job performance. Follows all University and Department policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, and non-discrimination policies and procedures.  Maintains a safe work environment.

Education and Experience

  • Equivalent to a high school diploma and two years of general experience in the care and maintenance of landscaped areas or general grounds, with one year in tree trimming and tree maintenance work which has provided a working knowledge of aerial equipment and safety practices and the necessary skills for climbing and high-altitude tree trimming required.

Physical Summary

Heavy work - Job involves lifting more than 40 pounds. Approximately half of the incumbent's time will be spent walking, standing, squatting, kneeling, or climbing

Licenses / Certificates

  • CA Driver's License required. Employees who are required to operate motorized vehicles and/or use their personal vehicle more than once a month on university business are required to take a mandatory Defensive Driving course and enroll in the DMV Employee Pull Notice (EPN) Program.

Compensation

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.

CSU Classification Salary Range: The CSU Classification Salary Range for this position is $4,073 - $6,653 per month.

Time Base

1.0  time-base, 40 hours per week.

Duration of Appointment

This is a temporary position for one year with no permanent status granted. Temporary assignments may expire prior to the ending date.
