Job Summary:

This role advises international students, including partnership program participants, transitory students, and exchange students, on a wide range of moderately complex and/or sensitive issues. These issues include immigration matters, campus procedures and policies, cultural and social adjustment, and academics to help students achieve their educational and career goals. Additionally, the position supports visiting scholars and provides them with needed immigration support.

Duties and responsibilities

Under the general supervision of Associate Dean, the International Student Advisor performs the following duties in the Center for International Studies and Programs (CISP) in the areas of immigration advising, student success, and academic support:

• Serves as Designated School Official and Alternate Responsible Officer to support the immigration needs of international students and scholars (both F and J visas)

• Advise individually and proactively F-1 students, J-1 students and/or scholars on a variety of moderately complex topics regarding immigration, finances, financial aid, academic and personal matters

• Review, analyze, and process all student and scholar requests, including those related to maintaining (e.g., reduced course load) or regaining (e.g., reinstatement) immigration status.

• Demonstrate sound decision-making skills. Use knowledge and judgment to recommend solutions to problems where precedent may not exist.

• Create and maintain records accurately and timely in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS)

• Monitor and respond to SEVIS Alerts regularly and independently

• Utilize working knowledge of the practices and procedures on campus to support students and faculty with the requirements related to on-campus employment.

• Guide students through the application process for off-campus employment (e.g., curricular and optional practical training)

• Stay abreast of federal regulations and California State University policies related to international students on F or J visas

Student Success:

• Coordinates group advising sessions and participates in planning and implementing orientation for international students, including airport pick-ups and move-in support as needed

• Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with a wide range of students, faculty and the general public including the ISS unit and other campus, community, and government support services for international students

• Participates in the coordination and delivery of college- and campus-wide programming catered to international students and internationalization and enrollment management efforts.

• Collaborates with International Admissions, Student Financial Services, International Extension Programs, and other offices to ensure efficient student recruitment, admission, enrollment, and orientation each term

• Creates content to increase engagement, raise awareness, and foster collaboration and communication among students and campus in support of outcome-based orientation, transition, belonging, and success programming for international students

• Drafts and delivers student communication plans that support awareness, preparation and notifications of upcoming events, campus/community services, issues/concerns, timelines for required documents, and other international student requirements for successful program integration and academic success

• Ensures effective program coordination for partnership students by using initiative and resourcefulness to plan and implement long-term program improvements; provides timely correspondence; document processing, recruitment timelines, and program assessment and improvement

Academic Support:

• Monitors students' academic progress

• Provides advice and assistance to students regarding progress toward degree and/or program completion; Identifies presents alternative academic options when needed; resolves scheduling conflicts; supports the resolution of similar issues; and refers students to relevant campus resources

• Communicates proactively with international partners, campus stakeholders (e.g., Academic Success and Undergraduate Advising and the Office of Graduate Studies), and academic departments on students’ needs and status

Other Duties

• Coordinates the efforts of ISS’ student assistants

• Perform other classification-related duties as assigned

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job-related field. (Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.)
  • Experience: Equivalent of two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of a competence and indicate the potential for further growth. (A master's degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.)

Required Qualifications:

  • Working knowledge of the practices, procedures and activities of the program to which assigned.
  • General knowledge of the methods and problems of organizational and program management.
  • General knowledge of research and interview techniques; and of the principles of individual and group behavior.
  • Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations.
  • Ability to use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements.
  • Ability to obtain factual and interpretive information through interviews.
  • Ability to reason logically; ability to collect, compile, analyze and evaluate data and make verbal or written presentation based on these data.
  • Ability to advise students individually and in groups on routine matters where required;
  • Ability to recognize multicultural, multi-sexed and multi-aged value systems and work accordingly.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations, private and public agencies and others in committee work, and student advising and community contacts.
  • Ability to rapidly acquire a general knowledge of the overall operation, functions and programs of the campus to which assigned.
  • Demonstrated ability to make decisions and carry through actions having implications with regard to other program or service areas.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in a related field, for example, Counseling, Communication, Education, or International Studies
  • Second language abilities
  • Ability to communicate with multicultural groups and individuals.
  • 1-3 years’ experience in Advising international students
  • Knowledge of degree requirements and partnership articulation agreements at CSUSB
  • Specialized skills in design, presentations, and communication planning in support of academic success
  • Knowledge and experience with PeopleSoft, EAB/Navigate, and Online Service Request processes
  • Knowledge of immigration regulations and laws regarding F-1 and J-1 visas in support of partnership and exchange student needs

Compensation and Benefits:

Anticipated Hiring Range: $4,841 - $5,083 per month

Classification Salary Range: $4,841 - $6,884 per month

 

The salary offered will take into account internal equity and experience among other factors.

The CSU system provides a comprehensive benefit package that includes medical, dental and vision plans, membership in the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS), sick and vacation time, and 15 paid holidays a year. Position Information:

Full-time Exempt Probationary

Academic year schedule: Monday through Friday (8:00 am – 5:00 pm), some evenings/weekends.

Summer schedule: Monday through Thursday (7:00 am - 5:30 pm), some evenings/weekends.
