The Animal Science Department within the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences at Cal Poly State University is seeking a full-time, 9-month lecturer for the 2020-21 year beginning September 10, 2020.  The position involves teaching undergraduate courses, assisting in the supervision of the Cal Poly Equine Center, and serving as advisor to competitive equestrian teams.

Teaching assignments may include such courses as equine science, equine management, equine behavior modification, training of young horses, equine enterprise classes and various courses within the equine minor. The position will also be expected to establish and maintain linkages with the equine industry, and assist with coordination of enterprise classes and equestrian team events.

In addition, candidates should be able to provide practical experience and individualized student-learning opportunities such as experiential classes, supervision of undergraduate and graduate research projects and student internships. Duties may also include, but are not limited to, supervision of undergraduate senior projects, graduate student research, student advising, and teaching graduate level courses and/or in a Master of Professional Studies or certificate program.

Service activities will include participation on department, college, and university committees and instructionally related activities. Excellent written and oral communication skills and strong interests in undergraduate and graduate teaching are required. Particular attention will be afforded to candidates who have productive records of teaching and scholarly activity that would strengthen current department initiatives.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

B.S. in Animal Science, Equine Science, or related field. Demonstrated ability and interest in teaching at the undergraduate level; Ability to communicate effectively in verbal and written form; Ability to lift and carry 75 pounds. This position requires extensive interaction with students, horse owners, and industry groups

Demonstrated experience and commitment to student-centered learning and teaching, as well as the ability to collaboratively work in multidisciplinary settings is required. Demonstrated proficiency in written and oral use of the English language is required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The preferred candidate would have experience in reproductive technologies (i.e. collection, processing, and shipping of stallion semen; heat detection, artificial insemination, management of embryo transfer donors and recipients, and embryo transfer procedures). Also desired, demonstrated experience in behavior modification and training of young horses; and possess the skills to serve as advisor to competitive equestrian teams.

The ability to collaborate on research with faculty across the College and University is desirable. Candidates who demonstrate a commitment to diversity, and who have international experience or the desire to cultivate international links, are preferred.

The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

Cal Poly's Animal Science Department provides one of the finest Learn By Doing programs in the nation.  The department, which includes over 800 students within the two majors, is considered by many the most comprehensive and the best undergraduate program in livestock production and management in the West. Through its faculty and students, the Department manages commercial herds and flocks of dairy and beef cattle, horses, sheep, swine, and poultry on a farm of over 6,000 acres. Extensive on-site facilities and state-of-the-art laboratories provide the resources for students to learn the principles required for successful careers in fields such as veterinary medicine, animal biotechnology, food animal production and processing, animal nutrition, and feed manufacturing.
