Position Description

Job Summary

The Student Health Center Clinical Laboratory is a department within the Student Health Center essential in assisting health care providers in the diagnosis and treatment of student patients by performing a series of laboratory tests.

Under the guidance of the Clinical Lab Scientists and general direction of the Medical Director, this position is responsible for serving as the laboratory phlebotomist and provides support to the overall laboratory operations and clinical staff.  Duties include performing a variety of standard clinical assistance work, functioning as the primary laboratory receptionist and phlebotomist. Additionally the position can assist in testing but cannot perform testing themselves. They can prepare media and reagents, assist in preventive maintenance and quality control in accordance with CLIA regulations (Clinical Lab Improvement Amendments of 1988)  for use in the diagnosis and treatment of medical problems.

Under the guidance of the Clinical Lab Scientists and general direction of the Medical Director, the incumbent will:

  • Assist in daily operations of the laboratory and the health clinic.
  • Make decisions related to general workflow.
  •  Assist the Clinical Lab Scientists or Medical Director with processes related to laboratory or health center operations.
  • Develop and maintain forms, documents or statistics for the laboratory.
  • Provide feedback, interpret and apply policy and procedures related to the laboratory.
  • Maintain inventory tracking, reporting and record keeping

The purpose of Campus Health & Wellbeing is to help students achieve and maintain academic success and lifelong health and well-being by providing timely and appropriate primary and acute health care, disease and injury prevention education, professional mental health, outreach, educational services, and campus consultations.

Key Qualifications

General knowledge of clinical laboratory operations and equipment, including laboratory safety and quality assurance practices and procedures.

Knowledge of current recognized standards and terminology to perform within the scope of practice.

Knowledge of applicable professional ethics and standards.

Knowledge in proper assessment and safe patient care with the ability to handle a syncopal patient.

Working knowledge of lab testing procedures and methods. Demonstrated ability to apply various techniques to collect required specimens with accuracy and detail.

Education and Experience

Completion of a high school program and one year of related experience in a health care setting.  Post-secondary coursework in a related field or completion of an accredited program is preferred.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, DEGREES, CREDENTIALS: Possess (or ability to obtain by date of hire) and maintain the following: Valid and current certification as a Certified Phlebotomy Technician I, as defined by the California Department of Health Services, which permits the incumbent to perform skin punctures and venipuncture.  Valid and current basic life support cardiopulmonary resuscitation and automated external defibrillator (CPR/AED) certification prior to employment.

Salary:

Anticipated Hiring Range: $40,056 - $50,000 Per Year

Classification Range: $40,056 - $66,360 Per Year
