The Food Science and Nutrition Department in the College of Agriculture, Food, and Environmental Sciences at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo is seeking a full-time, academic year lecturer in Foodservice and Nutrition Systems Management for the 2023-2024 year, starting September 14, 2023.
The College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences is nearing completion of a multidisciplinary building of $125 million that will benefit this position with seven food and nutrition research labs including a culinary suite, a sensory laboratory, two food safety laboratories, and a food chemistry and analytical laboratory.
The candidate’s primary teaching contribution will be in the areas of Management in Foodservice and Nutrition Systems and Culinology® with an emphasis on quantity food planning and preparation to meet specific nutritional requirements/guidelines for various foodservice facilities, including healthcare facilities, large corporate institutions and schools.
Courses taught depend on student demand with the successful candidate having expertise in the above areas that would translate to one or more of the following courses: FSN 121: Fundamentals of Food, FSN 321: Contemporary Issues in Food Choice and Preparation, FSN 343: Foodservice Operations I, FSN 344: Foodservice Operations II, and/or FSN 426: Nutrition and Foodservice Systems Management. Initial rank and salary for lecturer faculty are based on professional experience and educational background and are determined by the hiring department. Most new lecturers are hired at the Lecturer A or B rank. As of July 2022, the classification salary ranges for the respective ranks are:
Lecturer A: $4,530-$6,056
Lecturer B: $5,405-$11,994
Lecturer C: $6,190-$13,172
Lecturer D: $7,794-$13,797

Required Qualifications/Specialized Skills:
- Earned Bachelors and Master’s in Nutrition, Food Science, Foodservice or closely related field.
- Demonstrated experience in related field of expertise.
- Demonstrated experience and commitment to student-centered learning and teaching, as well as the ability to collaboratively work in multidisciplinary settings.
- The ability to be a team player and to interact well with peers, students, industry, government agencies and the public
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
- Commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills and strong interests in undergraduate and graduate teaching.
- Demonstrated proficiency in written and oral use of the English language.
- RD/RDN credential.
- PhD in Nutrition, Food Science, Foodservice or closely related field.
- University-level teaching experience desirable.
- Preference will be given to those with experience in working with diverse populations and fostering a collaborative, supportive and inclusive environment.
- Preference will also be given to those with relevant work experience and those who bring professional capabilities.
- Ability to collaborate with faculty across the College and University is desirable.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The Food Science and Nutrition Department has 8 full-time faculty, numerous part-time faculty, support staff, and approximately 600 students. FSN offers two majors – Nutrition and Food Science. The department hosts a dynamic and innovative Nutrition program that encourages national as well as international perspectives on teaching and research. The Department has strong connections with the stakeholders in California and research programs are developed in partnership with the Central Coast community and food industries along with commodity boards such as strawberry board. The Nutrition curriculum includes two concentrations: Applied Nutrition and Nutrition Science. The Applied Nutrition concentration is accredited by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and our Culinology® program is Research Chefs Association approved. The Department offers a MS in Nutrition, a MS in Food Science and a Dietetic Internship program.
