Position Description

Job Summary

This position works under the general direction of the department head. The responsibilities include overall administrative coordination and operational continuity of a complex program area, as well as in-depth performance of multiple administrative and analytical functions, including assistance with class scheduling, enrollment planning, personnel processes, and budget analysis and management.

Department Summary

Cal Poly's Food Science & Nutrition (FSN) Department offers two of the most dynamic programs in the U.S. in food science and nutrition. Our Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math STEM designated academic programs are focused on acquisition and application of knowledge through lectures, laboratory exercises, and research. The mission of the department is to educate students with contemporary knowledge and problem solving skills to prepare them for rewarding food, nutrition and health careers. Students' learning experiences in the department blend theory and application, reflecting Cal Poly's "learn by doing" philosophy.

The Food Science and Nutrition Department has 12 full-time faculty, numerous part-time faculty and support staff. There are approximately 550 students in the department. The Department houses a State-certified pilot plant; a culinary foods lab; quality assurance, nutrition assessment, food safety, food sensory, and chemistry-style teaching and research labs. The Department also offers a post-graduate Dietetic Internship.

Key Qualifications

Knowledge of, or the ability to quickly learn, university and CSU policies and procedures.

Skill in effectively interpreting, analyzing, and organizing financial and student data and information.

Demonstrated ability to research and analyze information with the ability to apply independent judgment, discretion and initiative in determining appropriate solutions to resolve problems.

Ability to adhere to the established policies related to Cal Poly data, screen security and confidentiality.

Demonstrated ability in maintaining confidentiality and handling sensitive information and situations utilizing professionalism in effectively dealing with a broad range of interpersonal contacts, including those at a higher level.

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or its equivalent.  Five years of general office support or technical experience. (Training at a vocational school or full-time college education may be substituted for two years of the required experience on the basis of one year of college education for 6 months of experience).

Licenses, Certificates, Credentials:

  • Possession of a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain by date of hire.

Salary:

Anticipated Hiring Range: $46,224 - $60,348 per month

Classification Range: $44,172 - $72,408 per month

This position may be "Designated" under California State University's Conflict of Interest Code. This would require the filing of a Statement of Economic Interest on an annual basis and the completion of training within 6 months of assuming office and every 2 years thereafter.
