Position Description

Job Summary

The primary functions of the General Chemistry Stockroom Instructional Support Technician II (IST II) are to manage the General Chemistry Stockroom, and to set up reagents and equipment for specific courses. This IST II is responsible for obtaining chemicals, supplies and equipment for the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, maintaining the inventory records and databases, storing, handling and dispensing equipment and materials, supporting lecture and laboratory demonstrations, and faculty professional development.

Department Summary

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry is an academic unit within the College of Science and Mathematics. The Department has approximately 350 undergraduate students in two academic programs leading the Bachelor of Science degrees in Chemistry and in Biochemistry, a concentration in Polymers and Coatings, and a minor degree program in Biotechnology. The department is a major service department, offering courses to satisfy chemistry requirements in other academic majors and to meet General Education and Breadth requirements for all Cal Poly students serving over 2,500 non-majors annually. The department is comprised of a Department Chair, 45 Faculty, 3 Part-Time Faculty, 1 Equipment Technician, 5 Instructional Support Technicians in support of the laboratory classrooms, and two Administrative Support positions, and an average of 150 Instructional Student and 60 Student Assistants per year. Key Qualifications

  • Extensive knowledge of college level chemistry, including general and organic chemistry courses with a comprehensive understanding of the laboratory techniques, methods and suitability of materials for related instructional needs.
  • Knowledge, training and experience in the proper procedures for the handling and storage of hazardous materials, hazardous waste, compressed gases, and cryogenic liquids. Knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations concerning a safe workplace, hazardous materials handling and storage, and hazardous waste disposal.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to set own priorities to coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines.
  • Experience with specialized laboratory equipment in order to set up, maintain, and do minor troubleshooting of equipment malfunctions. Ability to use and provide maintenance and calibration of analytical instruments.

Education and Experience

  • Three years experience providing instructional support services in a related discipline, acting as a student assistant, or in producing materials or supplies related to the discipline (two years of college with 16 semester units in courses in the related specialty area discipline may be substituted for one year of required experience OR four years of college with 16 semester units in courses in the related specialty area discipline may be substituted for two years of required experience).

Salary and Benefits

Anticipated Hiring Range: $50,160 - $65,000 annually

Classification Range: $50,160 - $87,048 annually
