The Music Department in the College of Liberal Arts at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, California, seeks a full-time, academic year, Assistant Professor, tenure-track, Associate Director of Bands position to begin September 14, 2023.
The Associate Director of Bands will be responsible for supporting the strategic vision for the University Bands and will assist the Director of Bands in the operation of the entire band program. The successful candidate will conduct the Cal Poly Wind Orchestra, direct the 200-member "Pride of the Pacific" Mustang Marching and Pep Bands, and coordinate all other athletic band activities. In this sense, the Associate Director of Bands is often referred to as the “Athletic Band Director.”
Other duties typically include but are not limited to overseeing the Music Department's band program and equipment needs. Summer assignment may be available for work required prior to start of regular academic year assignment.

Completed Doctoral degree in an appropriate music area by date of appointment; two or more years of demonstrated success as a university athletic band director, educator and/or concert band conductor at a high artistic level. The ideal candidate will have active performance experience; evidence of ability to work cooperatively with colleagues and students; evidence of supporting the inclusion of colleagues and students from diverse ages, genders, socioeconomic, cultural, and academic backgrounds; and is current with contemporary trends in athletic bands.
Demonstrated experience and commitment to student-centered learning and teaching, as well as the ability to collaboratively work in multidisciplinary settings is required. Demonstrated proficiency in written and oral use of the English language is required.
Successful experience in teaching General Education and/or music major courses. Additional areas of expertise and interest including but not limited to successful outreach work with diverse communities.
Preference will be given to those with experience in working with diverse populations and fostering a collaborative, supportive and inclusive environment. Preference will also be given to those with relevant work experience and those who bring professional capabilities.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The Music Department offers a Bachelor of Arts in Music and a minor in Music, and provides opportunities for personal enrichment to students from all other departments of the University as well. It serves as a cultural center for both the University and community through a program of public performances by student and faculty groups and through department-sponsored concerts, workshops, and lectures.
