The Mechanical Engineering Department at the College of Engineering, California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, CA, (Cal Poly) invites applications for a full-time, academic year, tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor rank in the general area of mechanical engineering design and structural mechanics. This is an opportunity for candidates who are passionate about undergraduate education to join a unique institution that values teaching and applied research activities.  As part of its strategic initiative in mechanical engineering design and structural mechanics, the department seeks faculty to develop and lead hands-on learning activities that foster student innovation and creativity.  The positions involve teaching both fundamental courses—which introduce the foundation to structural mechanics and design process while building students’ creative confidence—and upper division courses that emphasize machine design or include an industry sponsored senior design project. The projected start date is September, 2022, for the 2022-2023 AY. Review of applications will begin January 2022. Applications received after this date may be considered.

Successful candidates will be expected to teach a variety of design and structural mechanics courses to undergraduate and graduate students in classroom and laboratory settings such as design for strength and stiffness, machine component design, design optimization, statics, dynamics, and a project-based capstone course. They will also be expected to teach master’s level courses such as advanced mechanical design, continuum mechanics, fracture and fatigue mechanics, or other courses related to their expertise. Additional responsibilities include advising students, participating in university service activities, and conducting applied research in mechanical engineering. Research thrusts may include those tied to Design Theory and Methodology, Machine Design, Structural Mechanics, Creativity in Engineering, Design Thinking, or Engineering Education. Outcomes assessment and Learn by Doing are important components of the University curriculum.  Specific assignments will depend on department and program needs.

An earned doctorate (Ph.D.) in mechanical engineering or a closely related field from an accredited institution or international equivalent is required for appointment.  Candidates in their terminal year of an accredited doctoral program will also be considered; the position is contingent on completion of the degree. Candidates are expected to demonstrate a commitment to, or potential for, teaching excellence and scholarly activity at the university level, and continued professional development in the general area of mechanical engineering design and structural mechanics.   • Strong background in mechanical engineering design, structural mechanics, machine design, design theory and methodology, or design optimization.
  • Demonstrated active engagement in scholarship and professional development.
  • Demonstrated excellence in university level teaching and research (commensurate with time since degree).
  • Strong knowledge of industry design practices.
  • Demonstrated sound working knowledge in modern design and analysis tools.
  • Demonstrated excellence in laboratory-based, hands-on instruction
  • Show willingness to teach in multiple areas of the undergraduate and graduate mechanical engineering curriculum.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with significant experience in working with underrepresented students in research, teaching, service, advising, mentoring or community engagement

The Mechanical Engineering Department at Cal Poly is large and diverse in interests.  Located on the central coast of California, the Cal Poly Mechanical Engineering program is nationally recognized for its strong focus on undergraduate and master's level education through a lab intensive, hands-on curriculum. The current student population is approximately 1200 BSME and 50 MSME students. The undergraduate programs includes five concentrations: HVAC&R, Manufacturing, Mechatronics, Energy Resources, and General. The department has many student clubs involved in mechanical design ranging from the more traditional SAE competition clubs to the less traditional clubs associated with the amusement and entertainment industries. Support of these highly motivated students is an especially rewarding part of this assignment. At the graduate level, the department offers an MSME program producing graduates on thesis and non-thesis tracks.
