The Agricultural Education and Communication Department, within the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, CA, invites applications for a tenure-track, academic year position. The position consists primarily of teaching a variety of courses in agricultural communication with assigned time for scholarly activity.  Faculty duties include: develop and teach courses in communication, such as, digital media (audio, photography, and video), social media creation, management, and metrics (apps and web) and experiential communication; advise undergraduate students; provide practical experience and individualized student learning opportunities, undergraduate and graduate research projects and student internships; participate in scholarly activities as part of professional development; and service activities including participation on department, college, and university committees and in instructionally-related activities. Duties may also include teaching graduate level courses. Excellent written and oral communication skills and strong interests in undergraduate and graduate teaching are required. Rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Position starts January 2021.

Terminal degree in Agricultural Communications, Communication, Journalism or closely‐related discipline with professional experience in digital/convergent media, print, or broadcast; and demonstrated ability and experience in effectively communicating information to a wide variety of audiences.


Experience communicating science and technology to non-science based audiences. Experience within the agricultural industry, and academic experience in teaching and service activities.

The Agricultural Education and Communication Department at Cal Poly has approximately 140 undergraduate students in Agricultural Communications and 130 undergraduate students in Agricultural Science, masters degree candidates, and seven full-time faculty who teach in the areas of teacher education and agriculture communications. The Brock Center for Agriculture Communication and Agricultural Science is housed within the Agricultural Education and Communication department, and serves as the laboratory for students to develop their writing, social media, and verbal communication skills. The Brock Center produces a quarterly magazine, the Ag Circle, for the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Science. Ag Communication students are active nationally by attending the Ag Media Summit each year, and have earned numerous awards in national competitions, including the "Outstanding Publication" for the Agricultural Communications of Tomorrow organization. Additionally, Cal Poly produces many of the newly credentialed agriculture teachers for the state of California each year. Graduates of the department have proven to be effective leaders in secondary, post-secondary, and higher education, not only in California, but throughout the United States. Cal Poly is viewed as the home for agriculture education in California. The state FFA judging finals and the summer conference for the California Agricultural Teachers' Association have been held on the Cal Poly campus for 100 years.

The College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences, is the largest non-land grant agriculture program in the United States, awards nearly half of all baccalaureate agriculture degrees granted in California. The college is a leader providing students with real-world skills based on Learn By Doing laboratory and field-intensive curriculum, contemporary instructional technology, and uncommon access to senior faculty in small class settings. The college spans more than 6,000 acres of land adjacent to the campus core, and consists of nine departments. In addition, the college is home to a number of unique enterprise projects, centers and institutes, and is responsible for the operation and maintenance of Swanton Pacific Ranch, a working ranch in Santa Cruz, Ca with over 3,000 acres of rangeland and cropland.
